Metal Metcalfe

Metal Metcalfe is the collaboration of two sisters, Amy Lynch and Katie Baptiste. They make colourful artworks using repurposed materials; primarily 44-gallon drums from the food industry. Their creative practice is built around play and experimentation, scale and humour. It seeks to start conversations or lines of inquiry around long-held beliefs, structures, stereotypes and behaviours from a fresh and accessible perspective. They enjoy demonstrating – through their practice and artworks – a playful nature, a feminine sensibility to an industrial material, and humorous absurdity of scale, colour and place.

Concept for Patchwork of Possibilities, 2024, upcycled steel.

The three metal spheres in this year’s entry continue the artists’ exploration of the versatility and significance of repurposed waste materials, specifically those of the hard-wearing, industrial, 44-gallon drum.

They play with the traditionally feminine practice of quilt making, welding rather than sewing a patchwork of metal together from these drums. The quilt is a metaphor for comfort, history and family, often regarded as an heirloom. The globe structure represents Mother Earth; in nature, as in the patchwork quilt, nothing is ever wasted as everything is useful. Natural processes are constantly enacting transformation and renewal on discarded materials.
