Iain Cheesman
Iain Cheesman has a Master of Fine Arts from Elam, The University of Auckland, and is a maker of objects that link sculpture with painting, poetry and the concept of drawing.
There is often an underlying sense of humour within Ian’s work. This is a medium of communication that delivers more than an initial reaction, where there is often a slow defuse of more serious concerns. The materials he uses are diverse and vary between bodies of work. A commonality of his artworks is that they are made by hand and the mark of the handmade is apparent.
The works and materials he uses are diverse and vary between sculptures made from self-milled timber, to welded PVC rod. His large-scale stainless steel tube sculptures are realisations of his marquette style word works. He has recently introduced painting back into his art practice and has published two short volumes of poetry.
